Ashley Greene: Eclipse Will Be More “Guy-Friendly”
MTV spoke to Ashley Greene about Eclipse and she said , because of all the action, it will be more guy-friendly.
Just as co-star Taylor Lautner told MTV News on Sunday, Greene said Slade’s taking the third “Twilight” film in a darker direction. “I think it’ll be different,” Greene said. “I think it’s going to be a battle between the studio and the director, and it’s going to be a hard balance, ’cause I think he’s … a little more focused on it being real and maybe it being gorier and a little dark and kind of dramatic.”
Like the novel, which builds up to a climactic battle of vampires and werewolves, Greene said “Eclipse” has a lot more action than the first film and might appeal to more than just screaming teen girls. “The first one was very focused on this love story and really sweet and it was beautiful, but it didn’t have a lot of stuff that guys would go, ‘Yeah, I want to go see that,’ ” she said. “There’s going to be a lot more focus on [action], and the fight scene will have more emphasis on it. I definitely think it will be a little more guy-friendly.”
I can not WAIT to see the fight sequence. Knowing David Slade, it’s going to be insanely awesome. ^.^

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I was afraid of this…goshh i hate gore so much…PLEASE NO!
i am soo scared that eclipse won’t be good at all
ROMANCE PLEASE! its a LOVE STORY, SLADE!
At least she tells us the truth…
September 15th, 2009 at 7:18 PM
Yesssssssssssss, sweeeeeeet.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:18 PM
I’m actually incredibly nervous about David Slade directing this movie - eclipse is heavy on the drama but if you look at the book, it’s about ROMANCE and not gore. I fear that this is going to turn out badly.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Miranda: I KNOW! Me too…
This basically confirms my theory…if Ashley tells us this, I can only shudder to think of how much he’s really trying to change it.
*reads eclipse chapter 20, tears up a bit*
WHYYYY DAVID SLADE WHY?!?!!
If he ruins it, there will be no breaking dawn
September 15th, 2009 at 7:22 PM
oh no. oh no :[. this is exactly what i was afraid of! they chose him cause he did thrity days of night..gory not romantic at all even the romantic parts. the whole twilight series to me isnt neccecirly(spelling?)about the supernatural..its about a love story! eclipse is not supposed to surround the fight! its about love and the triangle..and certian back stories..but really why try and make it something its not? if they make it a guy movie they are nnot making it the eclipse we all love. im so scared im not gonna like it because it was my favorite book:/ dont they have enough fans already without trying to ruin it just to make it more guy friendly??
September 15th, 2009 at 7:23 PM
If I had a boyfriend, I’d let him skip New Moon, then drag him to Eclipse. And Miranda, TA, it can’t be a whole lot worse than Twilight….I mean, with the way BD turned out, i’ll be HAPPY if there’s a bit more gore in Eclipse. Talk about anticlimactic…..
September 15th, 2009 at 7:29 PM
Sheila:
It wasn’t anticlimatic to me…I didn’t want the Cullens to die, I’m not sadistic xd It was how the story was meant to end (for me).
Eclipse is a love story, period. Even if there’s ONE fight scene in the whole book…
September 15th, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Ok my thinking is, STICK TO THE BOOK! if he can make it look beautiful at the same time and maybe have a little more violence, I’ll be ok. But please don’t change things for the sole purpose of making it more “guy friendly” he was hired to direct eclipse, not 30 days of night, I jus hope Stephenie has a lot of input on this and who cares if some guys don’t think it already has enough action, I hate when Hollywood gets lIke this and thinks of this cliche of “more action, more tickets” who cares, twilight clearly already has enough fans, no more unnecessary additions! If the studio is upset and can’t make David film less gory stuff, they shouldve thought about how this might cone up like even I did. Great and i was getting excited for David directing, I really thought he would stick to the story
September 15th, 2009 at 7:31 PM
Ok well he can’t simply ruin Eclipse. He has Stephenie Meyer to impress and the fans too or he knows he’ll be lashed out against my all the angry twilighters lol. plus we know how hard-headed Kristen is so if she feels something isn’t right about the plot or whatever, she would speak out about it like she’s reported she’s done in the past. Yeah, there will be more action because of the fight scene and that’s great but I doubt David forget this is the Twilight franchise he’s dealing with and central to that is Bella and Edward’s love. Judging from the set pics, Twitter updates and reports from blogs, he’s sticking to the plot even if he’s playing up the action. And there’s no doubt in my mind that Rob and Kristen will bring the chemistry, especially with the added heat of the love triangle. I’m a bit worried about the gore and what exactly he plans to make “dark” about a love story, but I’m not TOO concerned. Yet.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Yes, but that fight scene is being built up all throughout New Moon AND Eclipse. And i never said i was sadistic and wanted the Cullens to die, it’s just that all of this pressure with the Volturi was built up during New Moon, then throughout BD, and you’re sitting here thinking “Oh migosh, there’s going to be this HUUUGGGEEE fight scene…who’s going to survive? I’m so nervous…” *chews nails and reads on* Even in HARRY POTTER…Harry Potter, Twilight’s only “rival,” there was a BIG fight, and BIG losses. You don’t WANT anyone to die, but you know the fight’s coming, and when ppl die…they die. They just..do. THAT’S how BD should have gone. It was, truthfully, a bit of a wimpy ending.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
…and I agree with “Sam: )”
September 15th, 2009 at 7:43 PM
I think that David can bring something new to the table. Each book in the saga is so diffrent from the last, and so is each director, it seems. Twilight was sorta a mystery/romance, New Moon is a drama/romance and Eclipse is drama/romance/semi-gory. So don’t freak, guys. Eclipse DOES have a lot of fighting in it, and it was semi-gory. Do you not remember how victoria died?
I’m looking forward to June 2010(:
September 15th, 2009 at 7:45 PM
Sheila:
Well, that was how the story ended, and you’ll have to deal with it I guess.
I on the other hand loved it, it was perfect
I just don’t want it to be some major gorefest taken over by this big, immature guy that probably laughs at fart jokes, sits on his couch with a bag of potato chips every night for fun, and feels uber uncomfortable around romance.
HE NEEDS TO GET A GRIP!
STICK TO THE BOOK. MINIMAL GORE INCLUDED.
I also find it odd that Stephenie has not said ONE word about him on her website…not ONE.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:47 PM
I think alot of the time I comment on the bad stuff or things I’m worrried about, so I just want to say, personally I am more excited about eclipse than worried, and I think David slade’s work can be beautiful too(anyone see the ending of 30 days of night?) so I am excited to see how it turns out.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:53 PM
Okay, TA, as you say, “big, immature guy(s) that probably laugh(s) at fart jokes, sits on his couch with a bag of potato chips every night for fun, and feels uber uncomfortable around romance,” do not become directors. Wrong wrong wrong wrong WRONG personality type.
And guys, i think this is being taken out of context. Ashley Greene–NOT the director–has said that it will be a BIT more GUY-FRIENDLY. NOT that it’s going to be a potato-chip-eating, sofa-sitting guy.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:56 PM
*guy gorefest. Sorry
September 15th, 2009 at 8:01 PM
I really hope David can do this. I do NOT want too much gore. Eclipse isn’t THAT dark. New Moon is actually darker. This is a romance story, so I really hope he can stick to the book. I’m trying not to be worried, but I just can’t help it.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:04 PM
Who cares if a guy goes to watch the movie. Hello!!! 99.9999% of the fans are teenage girls and grown women. There are lots of romance in Eclipse. Better not cut out the leg hitch!
September 15th, 2009 at 8:04 PM
You know, Twilightalcoholic has a good point. Stephenie hasn’t said ANYTHING about David. I wonder what that’s all about. Because don’t you guys think she would’ve said someting by now….?
September 15th, 2009 at 8:06 PM
YES YES YES YES. all romance shit is BORING. PLEASE BRING ON THE ACTION DAVID! and ya know….i guess a little romance.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:06 PM
Hey TA, did you ever get the New Moon script from that girl (I forgot her name)?
September 15th, 2009 at 8:07 PM
Meghan, if you think romance is boring, then why do you read the series? lol
September 15th, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Jasper’s story and Rosalie’s story are both really dark. Plus, Victoria does die pretty brutally. So these are just the things he’s probably playing up to be “darker,” he’s not gonna mess with the love story.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Just a question…Who won the contest of the pics? the ones that were supposed to be funny? Im dying to know!!
September 15th, 2009 at 8:18 PM
i agree with Jesspattinson. and all those other scenes. its been a while since ive read eclipse.
Mrs. Ariana Edward Jacob Cullen, lol, i dont consider this romance. at all. i read them cause i like vampires. the romance is okay, but to me, its garbage romance.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:26 PM
okay. That’s cool.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:36 PM
O.M.E. I JUST READ A PART OF THE SCRIPT. And I’m almost completely positive that it’s the real script, because it’s been out for a while, longer than the trailers, yet it still has the exact lines and scenes as the trailers. I only read a small part because I don’t want to ruin it for myself. You don’t know how hard it is to stop reading lol…..but I only read the breakup scene, and bits of others.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:37 PM
I mean the New Moon script ^^
September 15th, 2009 at 8:44 PM
i agree with jesspattinson, i can see it being darker for those reasons
theres no way it will be all that gory, it would never be released with an r rating, so i’m not really worried about it being super bloody
September 15th, 2009 at 8:56 PM
please no;(
the love triangle is what majes it ECLIPSE!
they cant mess this up! i dont mind it being “darker” just as long as they dont mess up the love story between everyone.
September 15th, 2009 at 9:24 PM
sry 2 disappoint yall cuz i am also a twifan but yall do kw that the 3rd book does have more action and yea it still has the romance n it and if we have faith n david he wont put the kind of gore yall are talking abt
cuz remember close 2 then end seth and edward fight victoria and bella does get freak out cuz she saw edward pretty much rip off her head and i dont kw abt yall but i have faith n david that he wont use that kind of gore n eclipse
September 15th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
YES…I like gory. :]
Well…I like action. I know that sticking to the book was always a task we wanted, but quite frankly (as I’ve observed), sticking to the book hasn’t been all that great. Movies rarely do justice to the books, so I suppose movies have need the lenience of being altered. Besides…did they really have that Volturi fights scene in New Moon (the book)? I thought it looked great in the trailer, despite it not being in the book.
And to be honest, I’m hoping for a fight scene in BREAKING DAWN. I’m one of those fans who actually got excited at the way Stephanie built up the tension, but felt disappointed when that tension didn’t live up to it’s potential climax. Just an opinion (which Sheila shares). :]
PS: I agree with Elena. There’s no way it’ll be “R-rated” gory. I’m assuming it’ll be gory in a tasteful fashion.
September 15th, 2009 at 9:31 PM
*Ooops…I had a typo. I meant…”movies need the lenience…”
September 15th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
i like for ther to be action bc the think we have had enough romance and its a great way to appeal to another demographic rather than just teenage girls. but either way everyone’s happy. a little bit of both……A COMPROMISE!! ha like my fave chapter from eclipse
September 15th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
YES YES YES!!! I am so excited for Eclipse, it’s ridiculous! I was actually very excited to find out that Slade was directing this because 30 Days of Night was a very cool VAMPIRE movie. I want the Twilight movies to have that horror edge to them, just as they do in my mind when I read the books. Now of course this is ultimately a romance but what makes this story unique is the supernatural element and the vampire subtext is inherently a violent one. There are a LOT of scenes in eclipse that would simply not be done justice by a director who was going to shy away from the gore and violence and make it a fluffy love story. These scenes are the ones that I think will be the most visually interesting - the flashbacks from the histories of Jasper and Rose (I cannot WAIT to see her go all ape$hit in her wedding dress and exact revenge on that Royce jerk >:D ), the fight training (the practice fights between the Cullens are written in a way that I imagine such a graceful choreography, I hope that comes through in the film) and of course the final battle between Seth and Riley, and Edward and Victoria (I’m already excited by this more-badass-Edward we’ve seen in the New Moon trailers!) This is the book with the most violence, the most action and the most gore, it’s very fitting to have a director who will portray that. Even in the romance, there is violence. There is jealousy and passion and intensity all the way through. Frankly, I would be super happy with r-rated, but I’m sure it’s not going to go that far (too bad.) Either way, I have total faith in the direction it’s going. Then again, I was thinking just this morning wouldn’t it be spectacular if someone like Quentin Tarantino directed Breaking Dawn - can you imagine True Romance + From Dusk till Dawn… LOL Okay I may have just proved my mind’s just a little too twisted…
September 16th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
I am worried but a lot of people made great points
On one hand..The story of Eclipse is a LOVE story..Bella and Edwards love story..
On the other hand, some parts of the book were dark: Rosalie’s story and Jaspers story. Not to mention when Victoria and Riley die.
I’m nervous but I havent given up yet. This is just Ashley’s opinion. I guess we will have to wait and see.

eclipse is my fave so I hope it lives up to my expectations! :\
the love triangle is the best part!
September 16th, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Ok, now that I’m reading people’s comments, my mind is changing. Eclipse would be cool if there was more action and gore. I mean, that would fit into some of the scenes. There can still be that romance and action. One of the reason’s why I loved the New Moon trailer so much was because of the fight scene at the end. Stephenie wrote great stuff of course, but action would make it even better. And I was so mad at the end of Breaking Dawn because Stephenie spent like 50 pages of just the Volturi and the Cullens and allies talking ti through. All of those vampires with such awesome powers, and no fight scene >:(
So I hope tat there will be a fight scene in BD.
