Variety: Breaking Dawn as Two Films is an Expensive Undertaking

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The two-week $481 million worldwide gross of “New Moon” has vaulted Summit Entertainment into the big leagues, but it also has created a high-class challenge for toppers Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer’s final “Twilight” novel, “Breaking Dawn,” into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg — who wrote the first three films — to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she’ll write.

One of those hurdles is figuring out whether “New Moon” director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back.

Tish Monaghan: Ultimate Guide To Volturi Costimes

Monday, November 30th, 2009

MTV has another exclusive with New Moon costume designer Tish Monaghan. This time she dishes on the ideas behind the Volturi costumes.

TIME AND PUNISHMENT
Tish’s starting off point for creating the look of (very old) Volturi? “What I did originally was go back as far in antiquity as I could to where there were visual representations of judicial gowns in sculptures and paintings. I wanted to find something that the audience would recognize as an official robe, but still have the flavor of the 14th or 15th century.” The heavy wool robes were made by the costume department, though each had a different kind of trim and sleeve detail.

MEN IN BLACK
“There’s this whole color reference to the Volturi,” the costumer explained. “Aro (Michael Sheen) is the pinnacle of the power structure. He has to wear the blackest of black of black. That’s dictated in the script. Everyone else that works with him moves away from the deepness of that color scale. Whoever is closest in power to him, is nearing his colors.” Here, Michael wears a Zegna suit, purchased in Canada after the actor tried on five others. “We wanted something that looked very slick, very well fitted, with beautiful fabric.”
