Q&A: Inside the New Moon Soundtrack
Posted by Nim

Spin.com has an interview with Alexandra Patsavas, the musical director behind the New Moon soundtrack.

How you go about something like New Moon, which features original songs from so many artists who don’t often appear in projects this high-profile?

The work starts as soon as the script is finished and distributed. Chris Weitz, the director, had a very specific point of view about how he wanted the music to feel. There’s a lot of separation and longing and loss in the movie; the bands and lyrics and sound and arrangements had to reflect that. Some folks, like Lykke Li, the Killers, Grizzly Bear, OK Go, and Anya Marina all came into the cutting room and sat with Chris to watch the movie and talk about their contributions. Other tracks were submitted with the movie in mind. I think it’s very difficult to succeed without any context.

A lot of people were surprised by Thom Yorke’s inclusion. How did that come about?

A Radiohead song ["15 Step"] played over the end titles of Twilight, so we had a relationship. I believe this is the first soundtrack he’s been on in a long time, so that’s exciting. A lot of bands were interested in submitting great material, which helps a lot.

When I first bought the soundtrack, I really didn’t enjoy it. After putting the CD on repeat a couple of times (I was really trying to like it!) I found that I really, really love it! This interview is pretty cool as well. It’s always interesting to hear how and why people chose to do what they do…or in this case…chose what music to add to a movie. :D

(sorry about spelling…*Choose* was what I meant to say)

I completely agree with you, Erinbrook. I also didn’t like the album very much the first time I listened to it. But now, after having listened to the songs a lot of times, I love it a lot! :)

My favourites are Meet Me On the Equinox, I Belong To You and Roslyn. There’s actually only two songs I’m not too fond of, and that’s Slow Life with Grizzly Bear and Monsters with Hurricane Bells. The rest are good.

I agree with you Maria. I also love “I Belong to You”. It took me a while to enjoy “Meet Me on the Equinox”…but now it’s one of the songs I tend to put on repeat :)

Just a random question for anyone: Did you like the video for “Meet Me on the Equinox”?

I too had to listen to the CD a couple of times but it’s really good once you truly listen.
I love when she ask if people could die to this. As a writer I ask myself that question while listening to songs so that I can better channel the pain that comes with it. Great pov.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the New Moon Soundtrack, but I’m a huge fan of indie bands, and I have liked Radiohead since I was 14 or 15 (I’m 29 now) and I was so excited to see Thom Yorke/Radiohead come onto both projects, I think most fans should really take into consideration how amazing that is, given that Radiohead are rather reserved insofar as the commercial spotlight goes, and the Twilight movies are just so huge, so I am very proud of Thom contributing his talents to both movies. And Muse! I remember their first single I heard was ‘Muscle Museum’ in 1998 or thereabouts and thought it was a Radiohead song I hadn’t heard before. Come to find out it’s this band Muse, and I’ve really liked most of their stuff ever since. Bon Iver is also another favorite of mine and the song he did with St. Vincent is really unique and I really like it, a lot! Now for Editors. What a gorgeous song they gave to New Moon, what a voice! I’d never heard of OK Go before, but their songs is wonderful, too. And I think my favorite songs on there at this time would be Possibility by Lykki Li and ‘No Sound but the Wind’ by Editors. Possibility is so epic, yet gentle and dreamy. And No Sound but the Wind is like hearing a vampire serenading his love. The lyrics are fantastic, and all the bands on there gave such a great effort. I much prefer New Moon’s Soundtrack, I own it, I got it the day it came out because I was so anticipating the quality of the artists on this so much more, it’s just more my cup of blood, lol. Really fantastic, and it’s one of my favorite albums I own now. It’s always on, and I think it will be quite a long time before I get bored of it. Alexandra Patsavas and Chris did an ace job with how they came about putting it all together, and achieving something of great quality from great bands. The whole idea of having them see the part of the movie they were going to write for was a great idea, that way the songs are 100% authentic and true to the emotional tones of the movie. I am a huge music snob, and I really, honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more.
